TMS Benchmark Report 2026

Speed, Automation, Cost

A comparative analysis of six mid-market Transportation Management Systems across workflow speed, automation depth, and total cost of ownership using synthetic benchmark data.

Published: July 2026Dataset: Synthetic (200-truck carrier)Version: 1.0

1. Executive Summary

This report benchmarks six mid-market TMS platforms against a synthetic 200-truck carrier profile. The platforms span a range of architectures: legacy enterprise systems, modern SaaS platforms, and vertically integrated solutions. All measurements use synthetic data and published specifications.

Key findings:

  • Workflow speed varies up to 4.8× between the fastest and slowest platforms for load-to-invoice cycle time.
  • Automation depth is the sharpest differentiator — platforms with AI-assisted document reading and auto-dispatch reduce manual touchpoints by 60–85%.
  • Total cost of ownership at the 200-truck scale ranges from $1,920/mo to $12,000/mo, a 6.25× spread driven primarily by per-truck pricing tiers and implementation fees.
  • No single platform dominates all three axes. Enterprise systems trade speed for depth of configuration; lean platforms trade configurability for velocity.

2. Methodology

2.1 Platform Selection

Six platforms were selected to represent the mid-market TMS landscape across three architectural categories:

PlatformCategoryArchitecturePrimary Market
McLeod LoadMasterLegacy EnterpriseOn-prem / hostedAsset carriers 100–5,000 trucks
Trimble TMSEnterprise SuiteCloud + on-prem hybridCarriers & 3PLs 200–10,000+
Rose RocketModern SaaSCloud-nativeLTL/FTL carriers 50–500
Tai TMSMid-Market SaaSCloud-nativeCarriers & brokers 50–1,000
TurvoVisibility PlatformCloud-native3PLs & shippers 100–2,000
Strivie TMSVertically IntegratedSelf-hosted / SaaSAsset carriers 20–500

2.2 Measurement Framework

Each platform was evaluated across three primary axes:

  1. Workflow Speed — end-to-end time to complete core operational workflows, measured in minutes for a trained operator.
  2. Automation Depth — percentage of workflow steps that execute without manual intervention, scored 0–100.
  3. Cost — 36-month total cost of ownership including licensing, implementation, training, and required integrations.

2.3 Scoring Methodology

Raw measurements are normalized to a 0–100 scale within each sub-category, where 100 = best observed value. Composite scores weight the three axes equally (33.3% each).

Disclosure: All data in this report is synthetic and modeled from publicly available vendor documentation, published pricing, demo environments, and industry benchmarks. No production environments were accessed. Results represent estimated performance under controlled assumptions, not guaranteed real-world outcomes.

A separate ranking: CarrierTMSRankings, an independent carrier-side review site, scores 11 TMS platforms against its own 77-feature rubric and rates Strivie well in several categories. That is their study and their methodology — a different exercise from this report, and none of the figures here are taken from it.

2.4 Test Environment Assumptions

  • Operator proficiency: intermediate (6+ months on the platform)
  • Network latency: 50ms round-trip (US domestic cloud)
  • Integrations: ELD (one provider), QuickBooks Online, one factoring company
  • All optional AI/ML features enabled where available

5. Automation Depth Comparisons

Automation depth measures what percentage of a workflow's steps can execute without human intervention. A score of 100 means fully autonomous; 0 means every step requires manual action.

8. Limitations & Caveats

  • Synthetic data only. All measurements are modeled from published vendor information, public demos, and industry benchmarks. No production environments were tested.
  • Pricing is estimated. Vendor pricing varies by contract terms, volume, negotiation, and bundling. Listed prices represent published or commonly quoted figures as of mid-2026.
  • Feature sets change. TMS platforms ship updates continuously. Capabilities listed reflect the state as of July 2026.
  • Operator skill matters. Speed measurements assume intermediate proficiency. Expert users of any platform will outperform these benchmarks.
  • Single carrier profile. Results are specific to the 200-truck FTL asset carrier profile. Rankings may shift for 3PLs, LTL operators, or carriers outside the 50–500 range.
  • Integration depth varies. This study evaluates built-in capabilities. Third-party integrations can close gaps on any platform.
